Letterhood is built on the belief that open letters can change the world — but only when they are honest, human, and civil. This policy sets out what you can and cannot publish, how we enforce it, and how to appeal.
Our philosophy
We defend fierce, uncomfortable, even controversial speech. We draw the line at speech designed to dehumanise, threaten, or silence others.
All letters pass through automated moderation at publish time. Flagged letters are held for human review. Community members can also report content using the Report button on any letter. We review every report and respond within 48 hours for safety issues.
Content removal
We remove specific letters or passages that violate this policy. The author is notified by email.
Account suspension
Repeated or severe violations result in a temporary suspension. The length depends on the severity.
Permanent ban
Accounts used for hate speech, threats, or coordinated abuse are permanently removed.
Law enforcement referral
Where content poses a credible risk to safety, we will share information with relevant authorities.
If your letter was removed or your account was suspended and you believe this was in error, you may appeal within 14 days of the action. Send an email to safety@letterhood.com with the subject line "Appeal: [letter title or username]" and a brief explanation of why you believe the decision was wrong. We aim to respond to all appeals within 5 business days.
To report a letter, use the Report button on the letter page, or email safety@letterhood.com. For legal requests, please visit our Contact page.
